August Is Here: Break Through with Broken Tempo Workouts

After laying the foundation in July, it is time to build strength and sharpen your edge for fall racing with August’s new Workouts of the Week: Broken Tempo workouts!

Ranging from 40 to 70 minutes, these sessions alternate hard running with short recoveries to help you maintain a high intensity without burnout. Broken Tempos boost your lactate threshold, build endurance, sharpen mental focus, and train you to stay strong even as fatigue sets in.

Let’s dive into the new workouts released this month.


Build Strength and Sharpen Your Edge for Fall Racing with These Workouts

These workouts combine the sustained effort of a tempo run with strategic recoveries to keep your power high, form sharp, and improve lactate threshold, efficiency, and race-day durability.

  • 5 Part Broken Tempo (50 min): You will start with a 10 minute warmup, followed by four sets of 15 second strides. Then, you will run five sets of 5 minutes in your Zone 2 with a short 1 minute easy recovery jog in between. You will end with a 5 minute cooldown.
  • 3 Part Broken Tempo (70 min): You will start with an 11 minute warmup, followed by six sets of 15 second strides. Then, you will run three sets of 11 minutes and 30 seconds in your Zone 2 with a 2 minute easy recovery jog in between. You will end with a 10 minute cooldown.
  • 2 Part Broken Tempo (60 min): You will start with a 10 minute warmup, followed by four sets of 15 second strides. Then, you will run two sets of 15 minutes in your Zone 2 with a 3 minute recovery jog in between. You will end with a 10 minute cooldown.
  • 3 Part Broken Tempo (40 min): You will start with an 8 minute warmup, followed by three sets of 15 second strides. Then, you will run three sets of 6 minutes and 30 seconds in your Zone 2 with a 1 minute easy recovery jog in between. You will end with a 5 minute cooldown.
