Watch Charlie Lawrence's Comrades Marathon Prep | 25 Miles & 2,600ft of Vert 20 Days Out From Race Day
Watch Episode 1: Comrades Marathon Build
50 Mile World Record Holder Charlie Lawrence is 20 days out from Comrades Marathon in South Africa and it's time to shift gears.
Coming off a nearly 2-minute PR at Boston in April, Charlie heads to the base of Left Hand Canyon in Boulder for one last big effort: 25 miles with 2,600ft of gain, fueled by 150g of carbs/hour, and a prototype speed suit.
With Boston in the rearview, this run was a chance to see how the Stryd data translates from road racing to big vert. Marathon power, leg spring stiffness, and impact loading rate on the descents all tell a different story than flat race day.
Comrades is no ordinary race. At 85 kilometers with thousands of feet of rolling elevation across the roads between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, it demands a completely different kind of fitness than a road marathon. Where Boston rewards pure speed, Comrades rewards strength and patience. For Charlie, Left Hand Canyon is as close to a Comrades simulator as Boulder gets.
